June 2018 Newsletter

As the year marches on, relief is well and truly here from the Queensland heat and humidity. Autumn saw us begin to move inward. Now that the winter chill is here it is time to fully embrace this movement. Even though winter in Noosa still gets its fair share of glorious days it’s so important to honour the season and move alongside its energy.

Our food requirements in winter differ tremendously to that of the warmer months. It’s time to leave behind the cooling, raw foods and move towards warmer, slow cooked meals whenever possible. Winter represents the most Yin aspect in Chinese Medicine. It’s a dark, slow, contracting or inward energy pattern. When thinking of the best foods to eat for the season, look to what grows naturally at this time of year. Root vegetables, winter greens, carrots, mushrooms and cabbage are all great choices. Hearty soups, wholegrains and roasted nuts are great during the cooler months and offer nourishment whilst tonifying the kidneys. In traditional chinese medicine, winter is associated with our kidneys which hold our most basic and fundamental energy. Black beans, adzuki beans, black sesame seeds and bone broth also provide much needed support for our kidneys throughout winter.
It’s also worth reminding yourself that there is great benefit to really taking your time when eating. Try not to eat on the run. Make the time to sit down for a meal and enjoy it. Allow yourself a moment and give gratitude. Be thankful for the nourishment, regardless of how humble or elaborate your meal may be.
Most of us enjoy a hot drink on a cold day. During the cooler months it’s a great way to warm up from the inside out. Often you may find yourself reaching for your regular coffee or a tea. If you’re after something a little different, it’s very easy to make a pot of something delicious! Although spices like tumeric and cinnamon have been around forever, they have become hot property in recent years for their many health benefits.

The following tea is packed with inflammation fighting spices, will help improve your digestion and boost your immune system. It’s packed with antioxidant properties.

CHAI TEA SPICE MIX

Ideally one would use the whole spices and grind them with a coffee grinder or mortar and pestle. However, you still get all the benefits using pre-ground spices.

  • 2 tsp whole black peppercorns (1/2 tbsp ground)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks (2 tbsp ground)
  • 2 tbsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground tumeric
  • 6 cardamom pods (1 tbsp ground)
  • 10 whole cloves (1 tbsp ground)
  • 1 whole nutmeg (1/2 tbsp ground)
  1. Grind the spices then sift with a fine-mesh sifter and return any large pieces of spice to the grinder to powder them further (Skip this step if you are using pre-ground spices).
  2. Combine the ground spices in a jar and mix well.

How to make chai tea

  • 1/2 teaspoon of chai masala mixture, above
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup milk of choice (coconut milk is especially nice)
  • 2 teaspoons black tea, such as Ceylon or Assam
  • Sweetener of choice to taste (we love raw honey)
  1. Bring the water, milk, spice mixture, and tea to a slow simmer. Cover and remove from the heat. Allow to steep for 5 minutes.
  2. Strain carefully into a cup and sweeten to taste

Massage Therapy is beneficial year round to us all, but during winter it gives us an extra special boost.
Did you know that massage therapy is proven to boost your immunity? It does this by increasing lymph flow. Lymph is packed full of white blood cells that fight off infection and keep your body healthy. Increasing  lymph flow means more areas of your body receive these cells in faster time.
Massage improves skin hydration. This is much needed when we are camped out in heated rooms day in and out. It increases our circulation, pumping blood all over our bodies. This helps keep muscles, joints, organs and extremities warm and healthy.
Massage encourages positive changes in the endocrine system where hormones are created. These changes decrease cortisol levels (stress related hormone) & increase oxytocin levels (happy hormone) leading to the release of serotonin and endorphins, relieving stress and enhancing your mood. Bye, bye winter blues!
We have massage therapists on hand every day at Kansha, including Saturday and Sunday all day so no need to wait. Book your appointment with us now!
Just a little reminder to our eligible clients of our Senior Longevity Voucher! These have been so popular. One of these vouchers allows you access to a combination of any 3 treatments that we offer here at Kansha, over a 12 month period. You can use your voucher as quickly or slowly as you please inside this time frame. Contact us for full terms and conditions but needless to say they are fabulous value for money and a great way to keep on top on your health.

March 2018 Newsletter

Ahhh, Autumn. One of our most anticipated seasons after the heat of a Queensland summer. It’s time to cool down and let off some of the heat which has built up in our bodies over the past few months. We move from the expansive, external nature of summer into the internal and introspective energies of autumn. It is the perfect time to reflect on your life, organise and let go of the old. Sleep a little longer, breathe a little deeper. Look for warm and nourishing foods. Pay attention to your internal life and be more mindful. It is the time to work on our insides, both emotionally and physically. Allow some time for self care, we need to love and appreciate ourselves a little more.

If you are prone to lung weakness, these conditions can worsen during autumn. Chinese herbs alongside some acupuncture is a wonderful way to strengthen lungs and help prepare them for the cooler months ahead. It can be a good idea to reduce your intake of dairy food as it can create mucus that is stored in your lungs, weakening them.

Some of the foods to look to look out for in autumn include rice, cinnamon, pears, cabbage, leek, almonds, walnuts, ginger, broccoli, apricots, eggs, lemons and olives. Eating warming foods helps to combat the cooler weather and harmonise our body with the new season around us. Internal warmth supports strength which is more important as the days get shorter and cooler.

Summer has seen us be busy little bees at Kansha. We are just coming down off an incredibly busy Christmas and New Year season. We have recently launched our online booking system which is proving to be a hit with our busy patients. Often it’s at the end of the day when we slow down that we remember an appointment we forgot to make. Online booking means we are accessible 24/7 for appointment bookings. You can find the booking link via our website (www.kansha.com.au) our Facebook page and Instagram page.

Due to high demand, we have also opened our hours up on a Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday for massage therapy. Proving very popular, we are thrilled to be able to offer this wonderful service to those who cannot make it in during the working week.

All our patients know we are a little obsessed with essential oils. Our practitioners often use them to compliment their treatments. Our visitors also regularly make comment on the gorgeous aromas that meet them as they enter our front door. We love to play with essential oil blends and this is one that we often use when autumn arrives.

3 drops Bergamot
1 drop Thieves
1 drop Ginger

Place these into your diffuser and drift away. Thieves oil is a powerhouse blend on its own, purifying and cleansing negative emotions and energy. It purifies the air by removing nasty airborne bacteria. Bergamot is a calming oil whilst ginger will aide digestion, help reduce inflammation and relieve anxiety. There is nothing not to love about this!

Many of our patients will have received a message from us recently regarding a new promotion, our Seniors Longevity Voucher. These have been running out the door with our savvy clients. Anybody 60 years and older is eligible to purchase one of these vouchers. For $240.00 you are able to redeem this voucher against your choice of any 3 of our services, over a 12 month period. We encourage you to mix it up try something new therapies but ultimately you get to choose how you redeem your voucher. Our available modalities includes 60 minutes Massage therapy, Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Physiotherapy and Counselling services. It is a fabulous deal. Come and get yours today!!

We wish everyone a Merry Christmas!!

The summer months represent an outward expression of energy. It is the most Yang of the seasons and is ruled by fire. It is a time for growth and expansion. Our bodies are full of energy whilst nature around us thrives and shares their abundance with us  It is time to cultivate our Yang energy whilst ensuring it does not come to excess. Eating with the seasons is paramount in Chinese Medicine. Foods are used to help cleanse the body, reduce toxins and build up the body when deficiencies are present.
Food is abundant during the summer months. Foods that are beneficial during summer tend to be cooling and help to restore moisture. Look for variety and try to eat lighter than you would in the cooler months. Eat outdoors with loved ones, put your bare feet on the Earth. Our aim is to eat foods that help to balance the heat associated with this fire ruled season. Apricots, cucumber, lemon, peach, corn, spinach, mint, mung beans, oranges, melons and strawberries are all cooling in nature. Eating foods raw will enhance their cooling effects. Meat products by nature are warming and building, they demand our bodies to create heat for digestion. Try to reduce your meat consumption if possible and take advantage of all the wonderful fresh, in season fruits and vegetables that are so abundant at this time of the year.

Eating disorders

Article by Tamalyn Markwell

“The way we look at our bodies, is closely linked to our self worth, which in turn is linked to our confidence and resilience.”

Our personal and professional successes can be affected by these issues and our ability for happiness, stability and contentment. The pressures that we face, in terms of how we ‘should look’ has, in recent years reached saturation level. We are faced every day by the very successful marketing ploys that are designed to create an insecurity in order to create sales.

What am I going to do about myself? This question is common among everybody, male and female. To look upon advertisements, magazines, billboards and even the side of a bus is to take stock of ourselves and how we ‘look’ and ultimately if we will be ‘acceptable’ to others. Who are the authorities on how we ‘should’ look? Have a look around at advertisements, really look at them. Now that we are coming out of winter and into our more warmer months, count the number of advertisements that aim themselves at the shame of our ‘winter bodies’. Are we bikini ready?! This is just an example of the creation of an insecurity in order to create sales.

In a moment such as this, the moment when you find yourself thinking ‘am I good enough?’ ask yourself this; For what? And good enough for whom?

I am passionate about individuality and I realised at a very young age that individuality wasn’t celebrated, it was and is still looked upon as wrong or unacceptable. Sameness is celebrated and encouraged. The individuality I am talking about is our unique characteristics, skills and traits that we are born with, many people have never been aware of their amazing talents as they have never had the opportunity to find or use them. Our differences make us beautiful and our differences are there for a reason, the reason being our purpose. Knowing our purpose gives us wings. This is how I work with my clients, together, we uncover their innate talents, uniqueness and purpose and celebrate it, as it is so very worthy of it.

I have lofty ambitions, I want to see everybody celebrating their uniqueness, knowing who you really are is a way to find true and lasting success and contentment.

I will take this opportunity to talk about another aspect of my work, eating disorders. They are more common than people realise, and affects people of all ages and genders. Eating disorders can take a serious hold without anyone around them noticing. Of all the prolific myths surrounding these issues, the most worrisome is that it is a ‘girl thing’. Eating disorders can and do affect many Australians, male and female. Disordered eating and eating disorders are two very different situations. It takes specific training to recognise and work with both. I am passionate about this issue as it is something that is surrounded in stereotyping and is not as understood as it ought to be. Eating disorders and disordered eating can be turned around with commitment and space to truly be understood and respected.

“For some reason, we are truly convinced that if we criticise ourselves, the criticism will lead to change. If we are harsh, we believe that we will end up being kind. If we shame ourselves, we believe we end up loving ourselves. It has never been true, not for one moment, that shame leads to love. Only love leads to love” – Geneen Roth

Balancing ACT (SALT winter 2017)

SALT MAGAZINE WINTER 2017 (Words Karina Eastway, Photos Krista Eppelstun)

I DON’T KNOW about you, but my life is pretty crazy. I race from one end of the day to the next and, consequently, each week is a blur.

The stress of it all? Reccurring shoulder and neck pain that should be treated with deep breathing, meditation, a balanced diet and plenty of sleep. But hey, to be honest, that ain’t going to happen anytime soon.

Instead, professional and holistic treatment is definitely required to restore some balance – and by holistic, I mean whole. To treat my shoulder and neck pain, I’m starting with my feet. And when it comes to holistic practices on the Sunshine Coast, Kansha Natural Therapies is top of mind. As soon as I step from the outside world into the Kansha sanctuary, I’m welcomed by an ambience more spa-like than expected: relaxing music, essential oils and complimentary Ayurvedic tea. Ahh, it’s here where the de-stress process starts and I’m only at reception.

Kansha owner Richelle Barker has 20 years’ experience in healing. A chiropractor and acupuncturist, she is a big believer in relaxation rituals to create a restorative environment, knowing that this affects the overall experience.

“We try to create an ambient space so people have a sense of relaxation, leaving the outside world behind and connecting more with themselves,” Richelle says.

The beauty of Kansha is the range of therapies and services available, with all the practitioners working together to create wellness and wellbeing for clients. “We’re not just a clinic,” says Richelle. “The idea was to have a strong, integrated team that had the client at heart. We stick to core therapies – massage, reflexology, chiropractic and acupuncture – which stem back to ancient traditions. We don’t go with trends.”

As the cooler weather approaches, it is common for us to be more vulnerable to being unwell. If you have not done so already, it’s time to think about giving your immune system some extra support. Eating plenty of whole foods with an emphasis on gently warming vegetables is ideal.
